Not all capacitor switch manufacturers share Maysteel's conservative approach to vacuum switch construction and testing —
which assures reliable operation even in the most severe conditions. Following is a side-by-side comparison with one of the
industry's most popular vacuum switches:
VS SERIES FEATURE MAYSTEEL BRAND X MAYSTEEL ADVANTAGE
Vacuum Bottle Gap 0.375" 0.1875" The size of the gap between the contacts within the
bottle is important. The larger gap increases dielectric
strength, providing higher BIL capability and restrike-
free operation at higher voltages.
Vacuum Bottle Volume 16 cu.in. 12 cu.in. Smaller volume increases tendency of switch to restrike.
Likelihood of Destructive Low High Restriking of the switch contacts causes overvoltage
Switch Restriking stress on the capacitors and other components
connected to the capacitor bank, as well as the switch
insulation. Repeated restriking causes premature
failure of these devices.
ANSI Single-Phase Test Yes No Maysteel tests to ANSI single-phase standards. Brand
X tests to less-stringent three-phase standards. Single-
phase standards require test voltage of 1.20 times the
rated voltage; three-phase requires only 0.87 times the
rated voltage.

switches require special installation procedures.

much lower current (3 amps) than solenoid (12 amps).

ability to close the switch when control voltage is not
available. ANSI C37.66 requires distribution capacitor
switches to have manual trip and manual close.
